Is your mobile web content design working for your business?

13 January 2017 | Australia

We don’t have to tell you that mobile consumption and usage rates have never been higher. Forget about statistics, you don’t have to look too far to see the impact that Smartphone and tablet devices have had on internet surfing trends. More importantly, you don’t need a web design company to confirm that mobile device usage continues to grow rapidly.

In 2017, if your website isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re likely to be losing a huge chunk of your target market. We’ve seen companies lose a lot of business in recent years simply because their website isn’t functioning as it should. Even if your website is mobile-enabled, it’s imperative to recognise that the design of your content pages is critical. This isn’t a statement we make lightly.

Back in 2010, researchers at the University of Alberta found that reading comprehension was impaired when content was presented to readers on a mobile-size screen. The larger the computer screen, the better the comprehension levels. Delving deeper into the research, it was discovered that the smaller the screen, the harder anything is to read and from here, readers are forced to rely on their memory to contextualise everything.

What this means for marketers and every company, is that in addition to a web page’s design, we also need to consider the content itself. With content becoming harder for readers to comprehend the smaller the screen is, it’s fair to say that very difficult content displayed on mobile devices, may results in lower comprehension rates as well as slower reading speeds.

Here are 6 important tips any company can utilise when devising web content:

  1. Always choose subject matter carefully: avoid information or subjects that are likely to be too difficult to comprehend. If in doubt, always tread carefully.
  2. Look at your content with a critical eye: people are busier than ever, which means they’re unlikely to persevere with content that isn’t engaging, entertaining or informative in some way.
  3. Less is more: as above, people don’t have time to read a novel or figure things out. Be brief, get to the facts as quickly as possible and don’t beat around the bush or expect people to fill in the blanks. They’ll become disinterested very quickly.
  4. Tell a story: each story has a beginning, a middle and an end. Your content needs to flow logically so prioritise your content accordingly, keeping in mind that your target market may stop reading at any point (so anything important should be right upfront).
  5. Headings matter: don’t mislead people with your headings. They need to be concise and actually relate to what’s in the article (clickbait is likely to turn your readers away quickly!).
  6. Ensure any links included in your content are visible: make all links big enough and ensure people can differentiate them from standard text. You also want to avoid link stuffing within your text so leave enough distance between links and always aim to cater for those with larger thumbs. This helps to minimise accidental clicking!
